नागपंचमी पूजन का महात्म्य

नागों की पूजा-आराधना का हमारे हिंदू सनातन धर्म में प्राचीन काल से ही प्रचलन है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि नाग पंचमी के दिन नाग देवता का पूजन करने से वह प्रसन्न होकर आशीर्वाद देते हैं और उसके कारण हमारी सात पीढ़ी तक को सर्पदंश का भय नहीं रहता। यूं तो अनादि काल से ही देवताओं के साथ नागों के अस्तित्व के संदर्भ मिलते हैं। वराह पुराण, स्कंद पुराण, लिंग पुराण समेत अनेक पुराणों में नागों के संबंध में विविध वर्णन किया गया है। यहां तक की नागों के संसार को नागलोक का नाम दिया गया है और उन्हें देवताओं के समकक्ष रखा गया है। देवताओं की माता अदिति की सगी बहन कद्रू के पुत्र होने के कारण नाग देवताओं के छोटे भाई माने जाते हैं।

हमारी पृथ्वी का भार शेषनाग के फन के ऊपर स्थित है। भगवान श्रीहरि विष्णु ने भी शेषनाग को अपनी शैय्या बनाकर विश्व कल्याण का कार्य पूरा किया है। समुद्र मंथन नागराज बासुकि के बिना असंभव था। भगवान शिव के गले में भी वासुकी नाग का निवास है और उनके शरीर पर भी अनेक विषधर सर्प उनके शरीर की शोभा बढ़ाते हैं। इसीलिए भगवान शिव का एक नाम नागेंद्रहाराय भी है।

नाग पंचमी के प्रारंभिक इतिहास के संबंध में वराह पुराण में लिखा है कि सृजन शक्ति के अधिष्ठाता ब्रह्माजी ने शेषनाग को सृष्टि कार्य में जनकल्याण हेतु अलंकृत किया था। तब से इस पर्व को इस नाग जाति के प्रति श्रद्धा प्रदर्शित करने का प्रतीक मान लिया गया है। यजुर्वेद में भी नागों और उनके पूजन का उल्लेख है। इस व्रत का महत्व पढ़ने या सुनने मात्र से ही समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

वास्तव में, नाग कृषकों के मित्र होते हैं और हमारी प्रकृति का अभिन्न अंग होते हैं। इसलिए उनके प्रति श्रद्धा प्रदर्शित करने के लिए नाग पंचमी का व्रत और पूजन किया जाता है। नाग पंचमी के दिन नागों की पूजा करने से भय, रोग, अकाल मृत्यु आदि से मुक्ति मिलती है, और भगवान शिव की भी कृपा प्राप्त होती है।

2025 में कब है नागपंचमी?

हमारे वैदिक पंचांग के अनुसार सावन मास की शुक्लपक्ष की पंचमी तिथि को नाग पंचमी पर्व मनाया जाता है। इस वर्ष सावन माह की शुक्लपक्ष की पंचमी तिथि का आरंभ 28 जुलाई को रात में 11:25 पर होगा और 29 जुलाई की रात 12:45 तक पंचमी तिथि होगी। उदया तिथि नियम के अनुसार नाग पंचमी दिन मंगलवार, 29 जुलाई को मनाई जाएगी। नाग पंचमी की पूजन का मुहूर्त सुबह 05:41 से सुबह 08:41 मिनट तक रहेगा।

व्रत की पूजन विधि विधान?

ज्योतिष विद्या के मता अनुसार पंचम तिथि के स्वामी नाग देवता होते हैं। इस व्रत के एक दिन पूर्व चतुर्थी को एक समय का भोजन कर पंचमी को पूरे दिन का उपवास रखने का विधान है। गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार अपने घर के दोनों और नागों को चित्रित करके उनकी विधि विधान अनुसार पूजा करें। कुछ स्थानों पर लोग रस्सी में साथ गांठे लगाकर उसे सर्प का आकार प्रदान करते हैं। कुछ स्थानों पर लोग गाय के गोबर से सर्प की आकृति बनाते हैं तो कुछ स्थानों पर लोग नाग देवता के मंदिर जाते हैं और पूजन करते हैं। कुछ लोग वास्तविक नाग नागिन के जोड़े को दूध पिलाते हैं। भक्ति भाव के साथ गंध, पुष्प, धूप, कच्चा दूध, खील, भीगे हुए बाजरे देसी घी से नाग देवता का पूजन करते हैं। उसके पश्चात सुयोग्य ब्राह्मण को दान-दक्षिणा और दूध से बनी सामग्री प्रदान करते हैं।

नागपंचमी का महाभारत से सम्बन्ध?

महाभारत में प्रसंग है कि अर्जुन के पुत्र राजा परीक्षित को एक ऋषि के श्राप के कारण सर्प ने डंस लिया था। अपने पिता की मृत्यु का बदला लेने के लिए राजा जन्मेजय जोकि अर्जुन के पौत्र थे नागों के विनाश के लिए एक सर्प यज्ञ किया था। जिसमें अनेक प्रकार के सांपों की यज्ञ की ज्वाला में भस्म होकर मृत्यु हो गई। तब तक्षक आदि नाग-नागिन माता मंशा देवी और ऋषि जरत्कारु के पुत्र आस्तिक मुनि के शरण में गए। तब आस्तिक मुनि ने नागों को अग्नि से बचाया और उनके शरीर पर दूध, जल आदि डालकर उनका उपचार किया। जिससे नाग बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने आस्तिक मुनि को आशीर्वाद दिया कि जो भी उनकी पूजा करेगा उसे कभी भी नागो से भय नहीं होगा। इस घटना के बाद से श्रावण मास की शुक्लपक्ष की पंचमी तिथि को नाग पंचमी के रूप में मनाया जाने लगा। इस दिन नागों की पूजा करते हैं और उन्हें दूध चढ़ाते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त एक अन्य कथा में भगवान कृष्ण द्वारा कालिया नाग को पराजित करने और वृंदावन के लोगों का बचाने का उल्लेख आता है जिसका संबंध नाग पंचमी से है।

व्रत की कथा?

प्राचीन काल में एक गांव में एक किसान अपने पुत्र एवं पुत्री के साथ आनंदपूर्वक रहता था। एक दिन वह जब अपना खेत जोत रहा था, तब एक सर्पिणी के तीन बच्चे हल के नीचे कुचलकर मर गए। सर्पिणी नें बदला लेने के लिए किसान और उसके पुत्र को रात्रि में डस लिया। सुबह जब किसान की पुत्री ने देखा कि भाई और पिता को सर्पिणी ने डस लि या है तब वह दूध से भरा कटोरा लेकर आई और सर्पिणी के सामने रखकर अपने पिता के अपराध की क्षमा मांगने लगी। इससे सर्पिणी का क्रोध शांत हो गया और उसने प्रसन्न होकर उसके पिता और भाई का जहर वापस खींचकर उसने जीवित कर दिया। उसे दिन श्रावण मास की शुक्लपक्ष की पंचमी तिथि थी। तब से ही नाग पंचमी मनाने की प्रथम चालू हुई।

नाग पंचमी के दिन व्रत रखकर नाग देवता के पूजन करने से उनका आशीर्वाद मिलता है। हमारे पितृ भी प्रसन्न होते हैं। कालसर्प दोष, और राहु-केतु जनित पीड़ा का शमन होता है साथ ही भगवान शिव का भी आशीर्वाद मिलता है।

Significance of Nag Panchami Pujan

The worship of snakes has been prevalent in our Hindu Sanatan Dharma since ancient times. It is believed that by worshipping the snake god on the day of Nag Panchami, he becomes happy and blesses us and due to that, even our seven generations are not afraid of snake bite. Although, references to the existence of snakes along with the gods are found since time immemorial. Various descriptions have been made about snakes in many Puranas including Varaha Purana, Skanda Purana, Linga Purana. Even the world of snakes has been named Nagaloka and they have been kept at par with the gods. Being the sons of Kadru, the real sister of Aditi, the mother of the gods, snakes are considered to be the younger brothers of the gods.

The weight of our earth rests on the hood of Sheshnag. Lord Shri Hari Vishnu has also completed the work of world welfare by making Sheshnag his bed. Samudra Manthan was impossible without Nagraj Vasuki. Vasuki snake also resides in the neck of Lord Shiva and many poisonous snakes also adorn his body. That is why one of the names of Lord Shiva is Nagendraharay.

Regarding the early history of Nag Panchami, it is written in Varaha Purana that Brahmaji, the presiding deity of the power of creation, decorated Sheshnag for the welfare of the people in the work of creation. Since then, this festival has been considered a symbol of showing respect to this snake species. There is also a mention of snakes and their worship in Yajurveda. All sins are destroyed by just reading or hearing the importance of this fast.

In fact, snakes are friends of farmers and are an integral part of our nature. Therefore, to show respect to them, fast and worship of Nag Panchami is done. Worshiping snakes on the day of Nag Panchami gives freedom from fear, disease, premature death etc., and also gets the blessings of Lord Shiva.

When is Nag Panchami in 2025?

According to our Vedic calendar, Nag Panchami festival is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month. This year, the Panchami date of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month will start on 28th July at 11:25 pm and Panchami Tithi will be till 12:45 pm on 29th July. According to Udaya Tithi rule, Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Tuesday, 29th July. The auspicious time for Nag Panchami Puja will be from 05:41 am to 08:41 am.

Method of worship of the fast?

According to the opinion of astrology, the lord of Pancham Tithi is the snake god. A day before this fast, it is customary to eat one meal on Chaturthi and keep a fast for the whole day on Panchami. According to Garuda Purana, depict snakes on both sides of your house and worship them according to the method. At some places, people tie knots in ropes and give it the shape of a snake. At some places people make the shape of a snake from cow dung, while at some places people go to the temple of the snake god and worship it. Some people feed milk to a pair of real snakes. With devotion, they worship the snake god with fragrance, flowers, incense, raw milk, puffed rice, soaked millet and pure ghee. After that, they offer donations and milk products to a deserving Brahmin.

Relation of Nagpanchami with Mahabharata?

There is a story in Mahabharata that King Parikshit, son of Arjun, was bitten by a snake due to the curse of a sage. To avenge his father’s death, King Janmejaya, who was Arjun’s grandson, performed a snake yajna for the destruction of snakes. In which many types of snakes died by burning in the flames of the yajna. Then Takshak and other snakes went to the shelter of Mata Mansha Devi and Aastik Muni, son of sage Jaratkaru. Then Aastik Muni saved the snakes from the fire and treated them by pouring milk, water etc. on their bodies. Due to which the snakes were very happy and they blessed Aastik Muni that whoever worships him will never be afraid of snakes. After this incident, the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month started being celebrated as Nag Panchami. On this day snakes are worshipped and milk is offered to them. Apart from this, another story mentions Lord Krishna defeating Kaliya Nag and saving the people of Vrindavan, which is related to Nag Panchami.

Story of the fast?

In ancient times, a farmer lived happily with his son and daughter in a village. One day when he was plowing his field, three children of a female snake died after being crushed under the plow. To take revenge, the female snake bit the farmer and his son at night. In the morning, when the farmer’s daughter saw that her brother and father had been bitten by a female snake, she brought a bowl full of milk and placed it in front of the female snake and started asking for forgiveness for her father’s crime. This calmed the female snake’s anger and she, pleased, took back the poison from her father and brother and brought them back to life. That day was the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan. Since then, the celebration of Nag Panchami started.

By keeping a fast on the day of Nag Panchami and worshipping the snake god, we get their blessings. Our ancestors are also pleased. The pain caused by Kalsarp Dosh and Rahu-Ketu is relieved and we also get the blessings of Lord Shiva.
