रक्षाबंधन हमारे प्रमुख हिंदू त्यौहारों में से एक है, जो प्रतिवर्ष श्रावण माह की पूर्णिमा को मनाया जाता है। रक्षाबंधन में रक्षासूत्र, जिसे राखी कहते हैं, का बहुत महत्व है। राखी कच्चे सूत के धागों से लेकर रंगीन कलावे, रेशमी धागे तथा सोने या चांदी जैसी महंगी वस्तुओं तक की हो सकती हैं। राखी सामान्यतः बहनें अपने भाईयों को बांधती हैं। लेकिन ब्राह्मणों, गुरुओं, और परिवार की छोटी बच्चियों द्वारा बड़े सम्बन्धियों को भी बांधी जाती है।
आजकल सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्तियो को भी राखी बांधने का रिवाज चल पड़ा है। साथ ही प्रकृति के संरक्षण हेतु वृक्षों को भी राखी बांधी जाने लगी है। हिन्दू धर्म के सभी अनुष्ठानों में रक्षासूत्र बांधते समय ब्राह्मण या आचार्य निम्न श्लोक बोलते हैं-
येन बद्धो बलि राजा, दानवेन्द्रो महाबल:।
तेन त्वामपि बध्नामि रक्षे, मा चल मा चल।।
अर्थात, जिस रक्षा सूत्र से महान शक्तिशाली दानवेन्द्र बलि राजा को बांधा गया था, उसी सूत्र से मैं तुझे बांधता हूँ। हे रक्षे! तुम अडिग रहना।
स्कंध पुराण, पद्म पुराण और श्रीमद्भागवत में वामनावतार नामक कथा में रक्षाबंधन के प्रसंग में उपरोक्त श्लोक मिलता है।
कथा कुछ इस प्रकार है-
जब दानवेन्द्र राजा बलि ने सौ यज्ञ पूरे कर तीनो लोकों में विजय प्राप्त कर लिया और इंद्र से स्वर्ग छीनने का प्रयत्न किया तो सभी देवताओं ने भगवान विष्णु से प्रार्थना की। विष्णु ने वामनावतार लेकर राजा बलि का अहंकार चूर किया और तीन पगो में ही तीनो लोको को दान में ग्रहण कर लिया। इस प्रकार राजा बलि के अहंकार को चूर करने के कारण इस त्योहार को बलेव भी कहते हैं। उस दिन भगवान विष्णु ने राजा बलि की दानवीरता से प्रसन्न होकर उसे पाताल लोक का अधिपति बना दिया। तब राजा बलि ने भक्ति बल से भगवान विष्णु से रात दिन अपने सामने रहने का वर मांग लिया। कई वर्षों तक विष्णु जी के घर न लौटने से परेशान लक्ष्मी जी को नारद जी ने उपाय बताया। उस उपाय का पालन करते हुए लक्ष्मी जी ने राजा बलि के पास जाकर उन्हें रक्षा सूत्र बांध कर अपना भाई बना लिया और भगवान विष्णु को अपने साथ अपने घर ले आईं। उस दिन श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा तिथि थी।
विष्णु पुराण के एक अन्य प्रसंग में कहा गया है कि श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा को ही भगवान विष्णु ने हयग्रीव के रूप में अवतार लेकर वेदों को असुरों के चंगुल से मुक्त कराया था और उन्हें वापस ब्रह्माजी को सौंप दिया था। इसलिए इसे वेदों की रक्षा दिवस के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है।
महाभारत में भी वर्णन आता है कि इस दिन द्रौपदी ने भगवान कृष्ण के हाँथ पर चोट लगने के बाद अपनी साड़ी का टुकड़ा फाड़कर चोट पर बांधा था, तब भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने उन्हें वचन दिया था कि वे सदैव उनकी रक्षा करेंगे।
एक अन्य ऐतिहासिक जनश्रुति के अनुसार चित्तौड़ की रानी कर्णावती ने मुगल सम्राट हुमायूँ को राखी बांध कर चित्तौड़ का गुजरात के सम्राट से रक्षा का वचन लिया था। कुछ लोग इस पर्व से पहले उपवास रखते हैं, फिर रक्षाबंधन वाले दिन शास्त्रीय विधि-विधान से राखी बांधते हैं। साथ ही वे ऋषि और पितृ तर्पण भी करते हैं। कुछ क्षेत्रों में इस दिन लोग श्रवण पूजन भी करते है। वहाँ ये त्योहार माता-पिता भक्त श्रवण कुमार की याद में मनाया जाता है, जो भूलवश राजा दशरथ के हांथो मारे गए थे। इस दिन सभी बहनें व्रत रखकर अपने भाई को राखी बांधती हैं, उनका मुंह मीठा कराती हैं और उनसे अपनी रक्षा का वचन लेती हैं। बदले में भाई उन्हें कुछ उपहार देते हैं।
इस वर्ष 2025में कब है रक्षा बंधन?
इस वर्ष श्रावणी पूर्णिमा दिनांक 08 अगस्त को शुरू होगी। किंतु इस दिन पूर्णिमा शुरू होने के साथ भद्रा भी शुरू हो रही। जो देर रात लगभग 02 बजे खत्म होगी।अतः 08 अगस्त को रक्षाबंधन का त्योहार नहीं होगा। दिनांक 09 अगस्त को भद्रा समाप्त हो चुकी होगी। अतः रक्षाबंधन दिनांक 09 अगस्त 2025 को ही मनाया जायेगा। इस दिन प्रातः 06 बजे से दोपहर 01 बजकर 20 मिनट तक राखी बांधने का श्रेष्ठ मुहूर्त है। उसके बाद सावन माह का कृष्णपक्ष प्रारम्भ हो जाएगा।
राखी बांधने में रखें सावधानी-
भाई की लंबी आयु और स्वास्थ्य स्मृद्धि के लिए बहनों को राखी बांधने में कुछ सावधानी बरतनी चाहिए। राखी बांधते समय काले और नीले वस्त्र न धारण करें। राखी कटी फटी या पुरानी नहीं होनी चाहिए। भाई का मुंह पश्चिम और बहन का मुंह पूर्व दिशा की तरफ होना चाहिए। राखी बांधते समय भाई के हाथ में नारियल या फूल और चावल होना चाहिए। खाली हाथ राखी ना बांधे। राखी बांधकर ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश का ध्यान करके 3 गांठें मारनी चाहिए। बहनें यदि व्रत रखें तो अति उत्तम होगा।

Rakshabandhan is one of our major Hindu festivals, which is celebrated every year on the full moon day of the month of Shravan. Rakshasutra, which is called Rakhi, has great importance in Rakshabandhan. Rakhi can be made from raw cotton threads to colorful threads, silk threads and expensive items like gold or silver. Rakhi is usually tied by sisters to their brothers. But it is also tied to elder relatives by Brahmins, gurus, and young girls of the family.
Nowadays, the custom of tying Rakhi to eminent persons in public has also started. Along with this, Rakhi is also being tied to trees for the protection of nature.
While tying Rakshasutra in all the rituals of Hindu religion, the Brahmin or Acharya recites the following shloka-
Yen Baddho Bali Raja, Danavendra Mahabal:.
Ten tvampi badhnaami raksha, ma chal ma chal.
Meaning, I tie you with the same thread with which the great powerful demon king Bali was tied. O Raksha! You remain steadfast.
The above verse is found in the context of Rakshabandhan in the story called Vamanavatar in Skandha Purana, Padma Purana and Shrimad Bhagwat.
The story is something like this-
When the demon king Bali completed hundred yagyas and won all the three worlds and tried to snatch heaven from Indra, then all the gods prayed to Lord Vishnu. Vishnu took the form of Vamanavatar and shattered the ego of King Bali and accepted all the three worlds as donation in just three steps. This festival is also called Balev because of shattering the ego of King Bali. That day Lord Vishnu was pleased with the generosity of King Bali and made him the ruler of the netherworld. Then King Bali, with the power of devotion, asked Lord Vishnu to remain in front of him day and night. Narad ji told Lakshmi ji the solution to the problem as she was troubled by Vishnu ji not returning home for many years. Following that solution, Lakshmi ji went to King Bali, tied a Raksha Sutra to him and made him her brother and brought Lord Vishnu to her home. That day was the full moon day of Shravan month.
In another context of Vishnu Purana, it is said that on the full moon day of Shravan month, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Hayagriva and freed the Vedas from the clutches of demons and handed them back to Brahma ji. Therefore, it is also celebrated as the day of protection of the Vedas.
It is also mentioned in Mahabharata that on this day, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari and tied it on Lord Krishna’s hand after he got hurt, then Lord Krishna promised her that he would always protect her.
According to another historical legend, Queen Karnavati of Chittor tied a Rakhi to Mughal emperor Humayun and took a promise from the emperor of Gujarat to protect Chittor. Some people keep fast before this festival, then tie Rakhi on the day of Raksha Bandhan with classical rituals. Along with this, they also do Rishi and Pitra Tarpan. In some areas, people also do Shravan Puja on this day. There, this festival is celebrated in the memory of Shravan Kumar, a devotee of his parents, who was killed by King Dasharath by mistake. On this day, all the sisters keep fast and tie Rakhi to their brother, feed them sweets and take a promise from them to protect them. In return, the brothers give them some gifts.
When is Raksha Bandhan this year in 2025?
This year Shravan Purnima will start on 08 August. But on this day, along with the start of Purnima, Bhadra is also starting. Which will end at around 02 o’clock late night. Hence, there will be no Raksha Bandhan festival on 08 August. Bhadra will be over on 09 August. Hence, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on 09 August 2025 only. The best time to tie Rakhi on this day is from 06 am to 01:20 pm. After that, the Krishna Paksha of the month of Sawan will begin.
Be careful while tying Rakhi-
For the long life and health and prosperity of the brother, sisters should take some precautions while tying Rakhi. Do not wear black and blue clothes while tying Rakhi.
The Rakhi should not be torn or old. The brother’s face should be towards the west and the sister’s face towards the east. While tying Rakhi, the brother should have coconut or flowers and rice in his hand. Do not tie Rakhi with empty hands. After tying Rakhi, one should meditate on Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and tie 3 knots. It will be very good if sisters keep a fast.
