Source of inspiration for writing Shri Hanuman Chalisa

Shri Ramcharit Manas was written at the behest of Lord Shri Mahadevji. It is believed that Lord Shiva had ordered Shri Goswami Tulsidasji through a dream to compose poetry in his mother tongue. With my blessings, your composition will be as fruitful as the Tritya Veda Shri Samveda. Tulsidasji woke up after seeing this dream. Some time later, on the auspicious day of Shri Ramnavami in Samvat 1631, the same situation was created as was there during the auspicious incarnation of Lord Shri Ramchandraji in Treta Yug. Tulsidasji started writing Shri Ramcharitmanas in the morning on that day.

That is, it took 2 years, 7 months and 26 days to complete it. It is also said that as soon as the composition was completed, Tulsidasji first offered this book to Lord Shiva.
